For the longest while, Cindy didn’t think she had a bucket list. But, over time she has come to realize there are things that she truly wants to experience in her lifetime. For her, it is a race against time. Check out her bucket list at Living with Metastatic Breast Cancer.
One of the items on her list is meeting k.d. lang. I believe k.d. has been her idol, her crush, like forever! Cindy grew up listening to her music.
Well, as fate would have it, k.d. lang was coming to the National Arts Centre in Ottawa last September. The easy part was getting a ticket to the concert. A little more challenging was how to get Cindy to meet her idol.
I decided to start with k.d.’s website. I filled out the online form and sent it in. I also sent an email request to her management group. I was not surprised when I received no response. I let it go.
Then about a month before the concert, I decided to give it another shot. I went back to her website and found an email address for her booking agent. I emailed Fred Bohlander in California. About an hour later, I got a reply from Fred saying he is forwarding my request to k.d.’s manager in Los Angeles. Yes…one step closer.
The very next day, I get an email from Michelle Carnero, k.d. lang’s manager. She says k.d. would love to meet Cindy after the show. Wow, I’m blown away! I am so excited.
I am not telling you this story to pat myself on the back or take any credit. I am telling you this because it reminds me of this quote by Nora Roberts:
“If you don't go after what you want, you'll never have it. If you don't ask, the answer is always no. If you don't step forward, you're always in the same place". ~ Nora Roberts
IF YOU DON’T ASK, THE ANSWER IS ALWAYS NO. I try my best to live by this. I am always quoting this to my daughter because it’s so true. And this is proof.
Michelle introduced me to Graeme Cooper, the tour manager, so he could get Cindy’s information. After that, I connected Graeme and Cindy directly to work out the details. Cindy’s sister, Connie, joined her at the concert and they both got to go backstage after the show.
Now, in my idealistic world, I imagined Cindy and Connie being escorted backstage by Graeme to k.d.’s dressing room. They sit down on a sofa across from k.d. who is sitting in a comfy armchair…you know…like being on the Ellen show, and they have an intimate conversation. In speaking with Cindy after the fact, she kind of had the same vision.
Well, Graeme did escort them backstage, where they stood in line with about 50 other concert goers also anxiously awaiting their intimate moment with k.d. Hello, real world! Cindy told me in truth she was a little disappointed at first but then she stepped back and thought about it and truly appreciated k.d. lang’s professionalism especially after performing for a couple of hours. She must have been drained and exhausted.

They chatted briefly mostly about “Did you enjoy the show?” and Cindy had her photo taken with k.d. by a professional photographer, of course. No selfies allowed. And that was that.
Cindy said that Graeme could not have been more accommodating and helpful. They were asked many times if everything was to their liking, did they need anything, was there anything else they could do. Graeme even followed up with an email after the concert. I think that is a testament to the kind of person k.d. lang is. She surrounds herself with good people.
For Cindy, she got to meet her idol. She can cross that wish off her bucket list. And that is a very good thing.
